GMB Optimization Checklist for Clinics & Hospitals (2026)

Local SEO & GMB – DigiRaps blog

When someone searches “hospital near me”, “dentist in Indirapuram” or “child specialist Sector 62”, Google shows three listings on a map before any website. Those three — the Maps 3-pack — get most of the calls. Your position depends on your Google Business Profile (GMB), and most clinic and hospital listings we audit are less than half optimised.

Use this checklist to find the gaps. If you prefer us to handle it, see our GMB management service.

The 12-point GMB checklist

1. Primary category

The single most important ranking setting you control. Choose the most specific accurate category — Orthopedic surgeon, Pediatrician, Dental clinic, Hospital — not a vague one like “Health”.

2. Secondary categories

Add up to nine that genuinely describe what you offer (e.g. a hospital may add Emergency care service, Diagnostic center, Pharmacy). Don’t add categories you can’t serve.

3. Business name

Use your real-world name exactly as on your signboard. Adding keywords (“Best Hospital Noida ICU 24×7”) breaks Google’s rules and is one of the most common reasons for suspension.

4. Services

List every service and treatment with a short description. These help you appear for specific searches like “knee replacement” or “root canal”.

5. Hours, including special hours

Accurate opening hours, 24×7 for emergency departments, and holiday hours for festivals. Wrong hours lead to angry reviews.

6. Appointment, call and WhatsApp links

Add your booking URL and make sure the phone number is answered. Use a tracking number with your main number as an additional phone if you want to measure Maps calls.

7. Photos — every week

Exterior (so people recognise the building), reception, rooms, equipment, team and doctors. Fresh photos signal an active business.

8. Description

Up to 750 characters: who you are, specialties, areas you serve, what makes you different. No phone numbers or links.

9. Q&A

Anyone can ask — and answer — questions on your listing. Add and answer the ten questions your front desk hears most (parking, cashless/TPA, timings, specialists).

10. Review velocity

A steady flow of new genuine reviews matters more than a one-time burst. Ask every patient after their visit, and reply to all reviews within 24 hours. Here is how to do it ethically.

11. NAP consistency

Your Name, Address and Phone must match across Justdial, Practo, Sulekha, Lybrate, your website and 40+ directories. Inconsistent details confuse Google.

12. Tracking

Add UTM parameters to your website link and use call tracking so Maps leads are counted separately from ads and SEO.

Hospital-specific tips

  • Department listings: Google allows separate listings for some departments with their own public entrance and phone (e.g. emergency). Follow Google’s guidelines carefully.
  • Doctor listings: Practitioners who are publicly facing can have their own profiles; coordinate them with the hospital listing.
  • Multiple branches: One verified listing per physical location — never duplicates.

Mistakes that hurt rankings

  • Keyword-stuffed names
  • Virtual or incorrect addresses
  • Buying reviews or offering incentives for reviews
  • Ignoring “suggested edits” that change your phone or hours
  • Duplicate listings from old addresses
